E1 - Letter Parts

Comping Type

Carefully Comp and/or trace and fill in the Sans Serif Alphabet and one Serif Alphabet
of your choosing using tracing paper and pencil. Use faint baseline, cap and x-height lines
help with alignment. Note the different parts of each letter and their similarities to parts
of other letters. Also be cognizant of positive and negative space relationships within as
well as between letters.

Lastly, comp a your name, first and last, using one of the typefaces on a third sheet of paper.
Locate and indicate the baseline, x-height, cap height and beard lines, as well as many of the following anatomy parts as you can:
Stem, Bowl, Serif, Descender, Ascender, Ligature, Finial, Terminal, Spine, Lowercase,
Uppercase, Counter, Cross Bar, Neck, Stress (Axis), Shoulder, Stem, Loop, Ear and Tail
